A friend forwarded to me an except from a newsletter sent out by Dr. Andrew Weil. I’ve felt for years he’s been one of best of the alternative medicine doctors, and have and use a number of books he’s written. My 1990 edition of his Natural Health, Natural Medicine has a great section at the end called “A Treasury of Home Remedies for Common Ailments” where he lays out approaches to try before heading out to the doctor.

Here’s his well written summary of a recent study:

Study author Ulman Lindenberger of the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin and his co-investigators looked at electrical activity in the brains of eight pairs of guitarists. They monitored patterns of brain waves as the musicians played a short jazz-fusion melody together up to 60 times, and published their findings in the journal BMC Neuroscience.

The study reported that the frontal and central regions of the guitarists’ brains synchronized to a high degree. But, more surprisingly, the temporal and parietal regions also showed significant synchronization in more than half of the pairs. These regions may be involved in simply enjoying the music, researchers suggested.

If you are into meditation, then you must have heard by now of the popular brainwave meditation CDs But even if you are a beginner in the meditation domain, it s a good idea to find out more since many claim it can provide powerful benefits

You can think about brainwave meditation as an optimized form of meditation, since it basically combines the old, traditional meditation techniques and exercise with the advanced technology, a technology that allows you to discipline your mind more efficiently

What Does Brainwave Meditation Stand for?

Brainwave meditation is based on the binaural beats these beats are sent to the brain, under the form of audio signals or stimuli with a certain frequency Therefore, brainwave meditation is often associated with a genuine massage for the brain What is the purpose of this massage?

Basically, brainwave meditation CDs help to induce a state of calmness and peace, a state that helps you relax and meditate in an optimum manner The main role of the brainwave meditation CD is to help the practitioners enter the desirable theta state and the surprising thing is that even the beginners who use brainwave technology can actually reach this state, without having experience in the meditation field Why is the theta state desirable?

Researchers have found a telltale mental signature that predicts whether an experience will be remembered. Once deciphered, the signals could be used to help people know when their brains are primed to remember, perhaps using an iPhone app.

“Instead of looking at how the information is being processed, we’re looking at how the brain prepares to process the information,” said study co-author Emrah Duzel, a University College, London, neuroscientist. “It may be that the state we look at prepares the memory system for a relevant event.”

Duzel’s team found the signal in the medial temporal lobe, a region of the brain associated with memory formation. Exactly how medial temporal activation improves recall isn’t understood, and researchers have only a vague idea of how memories are stored. As with most of the brain, memory researchers are like Eastern European hackers during the latter stages of the Cold War, trying to connect the mysterious circuitry of western computers to their functions.

Some researchers have found activity in the medial temporal lobe and other memory-processing centers when events are encoded. Other studies have found activation patterns that precede the formation of certain types of memories, such as verbal or visual.
